Calm screen activities for preschoolers

Some children enjoy digital activities but become uncomfortable with loud sounds, fast animation or too many choices. A calmer setup can keep play welcoming.

Reduce stimulation first

  • Lower device volume.
  • Choose slower background music or turn it off.
  • Reduce animation when the app provides that option.
  • Dim the screen to a comfortable level without making text hard to see.

Use one clear activity

Choose free key exploration or one short letter task instead of switching quickly between several modes. Predictable repetition can help a child settle into the activity.

Pair the screen with conversation

Sit together and quietly name the pictures, colours or letters. The screen becomes a shared prompt rather than the entire experience.

Notice when to stop

If the child looks away repeatedly, becomes restless or covers their ears, pause the activity. Calm play should respond to the child's cues, not compete with them.
